Anibal Sermattei della Genga was born in Fabriano, Ancona, in the current country of Italy.

The Holy Father Leo XII initiated his pontificate in the year 1823. He succeeded Pope Pius VII. His papacy lasted for 6 years, ending during the year 1829. He was succeeded by Pius VIII, who would become the following bishop of Rome.
